Red Roger 2014

Looks very solid overall but there's definitely improvements to be made. You've got too many elements jockeying for attention. The giant-sized captains are good, but the crews AND the islands AND the map details are just too much. It becomes visual noise.

The map details are a nice touch, but since nothing on the rest of the composition indicates that it's a map, their inclusion is more indulgent than necessary... If there were a parchment border or latitude/longitude lines on the piece then they might make more sense.

Lastly: nice drawings of the captains themselves but you've missed an opportunity for characterization. They're both in essentially the exact same mirrored pose. If the one on the right is evil he might be more hunched or furious... if the one on the left is more heroic he might be puffing his chest, for example.

I like the background but I don't like that everything has an identical texture; the sky, clouds and water all have the same texture although all three should be different.

Overall a strong piece and one of my favorites from you. I look forward to your next one!
